Harwich Town Profile

To paddle or sail, pedal or stroll are tough choices in Harwich

With three harbors on Nantucket Sound – Allen, Sauqatucket and Wychmere – Harwich is a boater’s paradise. And there’s plenty to do when you come ashore.

The first commercial cranberry-growing operation started in Harwich in 1846, and cranberries are still a vital part of the town’s economy and culture. The annual Harwich Cranberry Festival, held in September, includes a parade, fireworks and a two-day crafts festival. Harwich folks refer to it as “the biggest small-town celebration in the country.” Among other annual events in the town are Farm Fest, A Taste of Harwich, the Harwich Professional Arts and Crafts Show, the Irish Pub Road Race and the Snowflake Christmas Fair at the Brooks Academy Museum.

With 22 beaches to choose from, Harwich residents have plenty of ways to keep cool during the summer. Golfers can try the nine-hole Harwich Port Golf Course or the 18-hole Cranberry Valley Golf Course.

The Herring River, which connects the West Reservoir to Nantucket Sound, is a lure for kayakers and canoeists. The Cape Cod Rail Trail passes through Harwich, giving cyclists a safe way to explore neighboring towns.

There’s no shortage of places to dine in Harwich. Among your options are Bank Street Grille, Seafood Sam’s, Brax Landing and the Weatherdeck. If shopping’s your thing, check out the Port-o-Call Gift House, Dr. Gravity’s Kite Shop, Windsong Antiques and Consigning Women.

Located in an old schoolhouse, the Brooks Academy Museum is the place to go to learn about Harwich history. Exhibits in 2008 included “Cranberry Culture,” “All Aboard the Harwich Railroad” and “War Knows No Sabbath: Harwich in the Civil War.” A cannon used in the war of 1812 now sits in a park off Main Street.

The country’s oldest children’s theater, the Harwich Junior Theatre, gives youngsters a chance to take the stage. Classes and workshops are offered year-round.

Among other favorite local activities are fishing from the jetty at Red River Beach, listening to bands during the Harwich Port Musical Strolls and cheering for the Harwich Mariners during a Cape Cod Baseball League game.
