Sandwich Town Profile

History Defines Character of Sandwich

Sandwich, located in the northwest corner of Cape Cod, boasts views of Cape Cod Bay and Cape Cod Canal. It is largely residential, with a commercial base consisting mainly of restaurants, stores and shops and hotels, motels and bed-and-breakfasts. Many Sandwich residents commute off-Cape to work.

Historic Route 6A winds through the town and along the marshlands in the southeastern part of town. Sandwich is home to the Heritage Museums & Gardens, where visitors can enjoy a carousel ride, a tour of the antique-car museum or just a leisurely walk through the beautiful, lush gardens. The Sandwich Glass Museum is in the town center across from town hall, which was built in 1834, and the Dexter Grist Mill. Residents young and old find fun activities at the Green Briar Nature Center.

The Sandwich Marina, just off the Cape Cod Canal, is home to both fishing and pleasure boats. The town beaches sit on Cape Cod Bay, where the water is cool but the marsh and sand dune landscape is breathtaking. Sandy Neck Beach is open to vehicles. There are also several ponds in Sandwich that have beaches. The town is also home to Sandwich Hollows Golf Course

Two supermarkets are in town, along with several restaurants, including fine dining at the Dan’l Webster Inn. On Route 6A you’ll find the Marshland Restaurant, which opened about 50 years ago; along with its sister, Marshland Too on Cotuit Road, it’s a favorite among town residents.

The Massachusetts Military Reservation, home of Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Otis Air National Guard Base, Cape Cod Air Force Station (PAVE PAWS) and the Army Guard’s Camp Edwards – is located in the western and southwestern area of town.
