Wellfleet Town Profile
In Wellfleet, Life Runs on Tide Time
With a recently refurbished pier and a snug, well-protected harbor, Wellfleet is a fine place to drop anchor. Located near the end of Cape Cod – that skinny northern part of the Cape Cod peninsula – and framed by the mighty Atlantic and Cape Cod Bay, Wellfleet runs life on tide time. And you say you like beaches? Well, good-old Wellfleet has some of the wildest wide-open ocean beaches on the Cape, plus a sweet sprinkling of gentle bayside beaches where you can loll about like a baby seal.
The town boasts a goodly portion of restaurants, from gourmet casual (Mac’s Shack) to clam shack (P.J.’s Family Restaurant), along with the legendary Beachcomber restaurant and bar on Cahoon Hollow Beach on the east side of town. Don’t worry, most places serve up tasty platefuls of the legendary Wellfleet oyster.
Downtown Wellfleet is an old-school mix of antique houses on small lots, with a small commercial hub along Main Street, including a better-than-average small grocery store (Wellfleet Marketplace). The town’s hinterlands hold housing stock of all sorts, from tiny cottages to modern cubes. There’s plenty of room out there; 61 percent of the town is part Cape Cod National Seashore.
The town’s cultural centerpiece is the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater under the leadership of artistic director Jeff Zinn, but there are also a bounty of art galleries and craft studios (among them Andre Pottery Studio and Seacrest Narrowland Pottery). Wellfleet Drive-In on Route 6 is one the few outdoor big screens left in the state. |
